City Stage Dance Academy Class Descriptions

  • Hip-Hop
  • Hip Hop encompasses many different urban dance as well as freestyle movement to give students the opportunity to develop their own sense of style. Our Hip Hop classes teach rhythm, coordination, musicality and choreography with age-appropriate music and movements. Students are challenged to think on their feet while enjoying an energetic and fast-paced dance class. Our Hip Hop dancers develop focus, strength, and agility while having fun. This is an excellent class for high-energy kids who want to take a fast and fun dance class.

    Dance attire: sneakers, leggings, tight fitted shirt, or comfortable clothing

  • Gymnastics/Acro
  • Learn the basics or work on advancing your skills in this flexible Acro class! Acro is not the typical tumbling or gymnastics class. Our experienced acro instructor will guide the class towards increased flexibility, balance, strength, muscle control, discipline and concentration. This class will focus on fundamental acrobatic technique, teaching such skills as handstands, chin stands, elbow stands, cartwheels, back bends, walkovers, balance and contortion tricks, all each student’s individual level of experience. And it’s fun, too!

    Dance attire: barefoot, biketard, or leggings/shorts & a tight fitted shirt

  • Ballet
  • The goal of this class is to impart the fundamentals of classical ballet. Class will focus on basic ballet technique, proper body alignment, French terminology and musicality. Students will be introduced to barre and center work. Attention is paid to the proper extension of the legs and shape of the feet, developing movement sequences, body alignment, muscle awareness, port de bras and balance. This class will focus on positions of the arms, direction of the body and increased movement vocabulary.

    Dance attire: Leotard, tights, ballet shoes (skirts optional)

  • Tap/Jazz
  • Dancers will enjoy this interactive class that builds on basic movements learned in the Tap/Ballet combination class but is still appropriate for first-time dancers. Jazz class includes an introduction to proper warm-ups and stretches for the body combined with across-the-floor progressions and mini combinations. The Tap portion of the class will concentrate on building confidence through mastering more difficult patterns and steps. This is the perfect class combination for students who are looking to learn two traditional styles of dance!

    Dance attire: leotard & tights, or leggings and tight fitted shirt. Tap- tap shoes required. Jazz- Jazz shoes required.

  • Contemporary
  • Students will explore the basic techniques and skills from ballet, jazz and modern. This class emphasizes interpretation of music lyrics while telling a story with movement that can be fluid or abstract. This class will incorporate many of the foundations of dance technique, including suspension and release, fall and recovery, the use of momentum and connecting breath with movement. Dancers will explore new ways of moving in combinations, floor work and partnering, and also in various methods of improvisation. As students progress through each level the curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate.

    Dance attire: leotard & tights, or leggings and tight fitted shirt. Shoes: jazz shoes or barefoot (up to the discretion of the teacher)

  • Tap/Ballet
  • This popular combination class is designed for students to express their individuality through the art of dance. This class introduces young students to ballet, tap, and basic tumbling skills. Students will have fun learning basic ballet and tap terminology and will continue to enjoy expressing themselves through the art of dance in this fun and interactive class. Our tap portion of the class focuses on the basics of tap while also teaching musicality and rhythm. Our ballet portion of the class will focus on building the strength, flexibility and control needed to execute ballet moves.

    Dance attire: leotard & tights. Tap- tap shoes required. Ballet- ballet shoes required.

  • Tumblebugs/Hip Hop
  • This class is focused on the fundamentals of acrobatics and hip hop. The tumblebugs portion focuses on tumbling progressions including forward rolls, handstands, cartwheels, bridges, and improving flexibility.

    The hip hop instills rhythm and helps young dancers develop muscle memory. This style is upbeat and great for girls and boys who like to move! This class is perfect for little ones who love gymnastics AND dance. It is a high energy class that teaches rhythm, coordination, and balance through age-appropriate movements set to fun upbeat music.

    Dance attire: biketard or leggings/shorts & a tight fitted shirt. Shoes: sneakers for hip hop portion, barefoot for gymnastics portion.

  • Boppin’ Tots
  • A 45-minute introductory dance class for toddlers containing ballet and creative movement. Students are introduced to basic ballet vocabulary, while exploring movement and music in a fun, creative way. Beginner tap steps are introduced in a basic, introductory level. Our instructors use imagination games, upbeat age-appropriate music and props like scarves, hula hoops, and maracas to inspire and excite students about dance. Students will also work on classroom skills such as following directions, listening and working with others. The class ends with mat time where the students progress their gross motor skills through basic gymnastic techniques. This class is a positive and fun first dance experience for all! We encourage new students younger than 3 to try the Boppin’ Tots class.

    Dance attire: Leotard & tights. Ballet shoes required.

  • Salsa
  • While salsa is sweeping across the globe, there is no better place to learn it than in your own neighborhood! This class is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the dance and includes salsa etiquette, floorcraft, basic footwork, timing, and dance positions, giving you everything you need to get out on the dance floor! This beginner Salsa class introduces you to the rhythm and timing of the music, as well as technique. No previous dance experience is required.

    Dance Attire: leggings & tight fitted shirt or comfortable clothing. Shoes: jazz shoes or salsa heels (up to the discretion of the teacher)

  • Adult Dance Fitness
  • Sweat, tighten, and define to the beat in this sculpting class which is unlike traditional strength training. Class begins with a standing warm up to connect your mind and body, loosen your joints and range of motion, and build heat and energy. We plank, rotate, twist, lift, kick, crunch, move all around, and sweat… And it’s a lot of fun too! The class is led on-the-beat and in-the-beat and you may just find you’ve lost track of reps as the energy flow takes over. Dance your way to fitness in a high-impact dance class choreographed to your favorite music– you will enjoy a fusion of good beats and dynamic dance moves while having a great time! Don’t forget to wear your sneakers! This is truly a “Dance Like No One’s Watching” experience! This is a fun, high-energy cardio dance class that will blast calories and incinerate fat while jamming to awesome pop music! This class combines easy to follow dance moves with strength-training exercises and will have you sweating and singing along to the music. Build endurance, burn fat, and tone your body to your favorite hits. This class is appropriate for all dance and fitness levels. Get ready to shake-it and smile in this dance fitness class!

    Dance Attire: workout clothing/comfortable attire. Sneakers recommended.

  • Belly Dance
  • A solid foundation in technique is essential for any style of belly dance. Learn the mechanics of muscular isolation, timing, and footwork. The class includes warm-up, isolation breakdown and drills, and dance patterns to common Middle Eastern rhythms. Combination of jazz, belly dance, folkloric movement, and rhythms. The class includes warm-up, cymbal technique, and dance combinations influenced by several dance styles.
